Award of the djangoO Culture Prize 2023 to Bobby Falta for his life's work

Bobby Falta, born on 23.09.1941 in Salzburg, lives with his family in Memmingen.

He learned to play the guitar “on the journey from other Sinti”. Later, his great mentors and role models were, besides the legendary musical forefather Django Reinhardt, above all titans of American jazz such as Wes Montgomery and Barney Kessel. Bobby Falta played in various ensembles such as the band of Django Reinhardt’s brother Joseph Reinhardt, as well as being the founding father and soloist in the Schnuckenack Reinhardt Quintet, which was an integral part of every Saturday television show in the 1960s and 1970s. Performances in the most important concert halls in Europe were the order of the day. He also participated as a soloist in the first recording of the documentary “Music of German Gypsies”.

Bobby Falta is still considered one of the best and most modern guitarists of European gypsy jazz.

The djangoO Culture Prize was established in 2023 by the curators of the European Festival of Gypsy Music – Walter Abt and Alexander Diepold.

Music is a universal, direct, polycentric and dynamic means of communication, knowledge, understanding and boundless understanding between peoples and persons. The centuries-long coexistence of the Gypsies with the European majority societies since the beginning of their diaspora from the Orient to the Occident dates back to the 11th century. The culture of the Sinti, Roma and Gitanos has exerted its influence and inspiration on symphonic music, jazz, classical, modern or contemporary, popular or traditional music in significant ways in every European country, such as the music of Franz Liszt, Pablo Sarasate, Manuel de Falla, Johannes Brahms, Duke Ellington, Jimi Hendrix (Band of Gypsies) and many others.

This cultural award honours artistic personalities who have rendered outstanding services to the significance and value of this cultural heritage, which consists of music of all origins, periods and breadth, inspired by Gypsy culture and produced by the Sinti, Roma and Gitanos themselves. At the concert evening “Grand Metropolitan Gypsy-Jazz-Night” with Sandro Roy, the Jermaine Landsberger Trio and Giovanni Weiss, a formation emerges that fuses the special musical core of Gypsy and Jazz, conjuring up the deepest emotions and breathtaking playing techniques.

An exciting and unforgettable world-class concert experience can be expected with international stars of the scene on violin, piano, drums, guitars and bass.

Sandro Roy, shooting star on the violin in the field of classical music and jazz, is considered one of the most promising young violinists worldwide.

In 2015, he released his debut CD “Where I Come From”. Since then, the exceptional young violinist has had a remarkable career, has been highly praised by the press and has played at various major festivals in Europe and also in the USA. In addition to performances and prizes, several television appearances followed, including on the ZDF Morgenmagazin.

Solo performances with the NDR Bigband, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen or with Federal President Joachim Gauck in Berlin already marked his young musical career. This was followed by a live show on BBC Radio and a sold-out concert at the legendary Ronnie Scotts Jazzclub London.

In 2019, Sandro Roy played a solo concert with the Münchner Rundfunk Orchester under the motto “Gypsy goes Classic” at the sold-out Prinzregententheater in Munich, which was broadcast live on BR Klassik. In the same season, he made his solo debut with the Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra Amsterdam, where he performed Bach and Ravel’s “Tzigane”, among others.

In 2020, concerts followed at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Volksbühne Berlin and, as a highlight, his debut with his own band at the 41st Leverkusener Jazztage, which was broadcast by WDR television in the programme “Jazzline”.

In 2021 he performed at other international festivals in Greece, Serbia, Austria and Switzerland, including on ARTE TV “Concert” in the programme Giovanni Weiss Quartet feat. Sandro Roy. 2022 followed a solo collaboration with the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra, New Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra Prague, Bavarian Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra.

In 2023 he made his Asian debut with great success at the festival “International Jazz Conference Bangkok” in Thailand.

Giovanni Weiss, born in Hamburg in 1980, has been playing guitar since he was four years old.

Since his studies at the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre, Giovanni has played in a trio with his brother Jeffrey Weiss and his cousin Robert Weiss.

In 2010, the formation Django Deluxe emerged from this, which is primarily committed to the music of the great Django Reinhardt. Giovanni received an ECHO Jazz award in the category “Instrumentalist of the Year Guitar National” in 2013 for the Django Deluxe debut album “Wilhelmsburg”.

In 2015, Giovanni recorded the second album “Driving” with Django Deluxe together with the NDR Bigband. With this collaboration, Giovanni fulfilled a lifelong dream and won another ECHO Jazz a year later, again as Best Guitarist National. This makes Giovanni Weiss the only guitarist besides Pat Metheny to have won two ECHOs.

Jermaine Landsberger is undoubtedly unique in the European Sinti scene due to his breakaways from the Gypsy tradition.

Jermaine Landsberger’s powerful yet melodic piano playing is spiced with audible elements of Gypsy music. In the meantime, Jermaine Landsberger can look back on Europe-wide tours with international musicians such as Randy Brecker, Bob Mintzer, Larry Coryell, Stochelo Rosenberg and many more.

His US debut album “Gettin Blazed” was produced in 2008 in the States by Resonance Records in Los Angeles with US jazz stars like Pat Martino, Harvey Mason, James Genus and caused a sensation in the States as well. It spent nine weeks in the top 10 of the US jazz charts.

Guido Maytook lessons at the “Drummer Focus” drum school in Munich and attended various jazz workshops (Burghausen, Erlangen, Ingolstadt, Vermont Jazz Center). After graduating from high school in 1988, he moved to Munich and started his career mainly in jazz and funk. Tours, concerts and CD productions with jazz greats such as Benny Golson, The New York Voices, Paul Kuhn and Diana Krall.

Peter Cudek initially received training on the electric bass as a youth. Influenced by Juraj Kalasz, he switched to the double bass and completed classical studies at the conservatory in his native city. He then moved to Germany and completed postgraduate studies at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich with Paulo Cardoso from 2004.

Private lessons with Ron Carter in New York followed in 2012. Recordings and concert tours with Claudio Roditi/Klaus Ignatzek, Harry Sokal, Fritz Pauer, Oliver Kent, Jeff Gardner, Ack van Rooyen, Karl Ratzer, Stephanie Lottermoser/Torsten Goods and Lisa Wahlandt have made him internationally known. Since 2015, Cudek has belonged to the trio Elf alongside Walter Lang and Gerwin Eisenhauer, with whom the albums MusicBoxMusic (2016) and The Brazillian Album (2018) were produced.

Walter Abt, born in Memmingen/Germany, is an exceptionally versatile composer and performer, with a special flair for improvisation, influenced by his friendship with Sinti musicians. At the tender age of 17, he was already playing various instruments in numerous ensembles: jazz and acoustic guitar, piano, trumpet, flugelhorn, double bass, accordion and trombone. He received soloistic precision and technical polish during his studies at the Musikhochschule in Graz, at the Conservatorio Statale in Verona as well as in the master class at the Mozarteum Salzburg. As leader of the “Munich Guitars Orchestra” he was awarded 1st prize at the Bavarian Orchestra Competition in 1992 as well as at the German Orchestra Competition of the German Music Council. He also received the special prize for outstanding interpretation of contemporary music. In 1998 Walter Abt participated as arranger and soloist for Giora Feidman on the CD “Schubert and Yiddish Songs” and performed with Feidman in live television appearances. His collaboration with composers such as Leo Brouwer, Paulo Bellinati, Gianfranco Grisi, Ennio Morricone, with orchestras such as the “Virtuosi di Praga”, “the Georgian Chamber Philharmonic Ingolstadt” and the Venetian “Orchestra de la Fenice” is also documented by video and CD recordings (“Spaces”, “Concierto de Aranjuez”, “Concerto del Benaco”). He surprises his audiences again and again with a musical tightrope walk between classical music, jazz and world music also with historical instruments such as the lute or the vihuela and is a welcome guest at many international festivals.

If you look at the history of jazz and consider which style is not of African-American origin, there is probably only one answer: Gypsy swing. Diknu Schneeberger and his father Joschi before him cultivate this tradition with heart and soul.

Swing de Vienne by Diknu Schneeberger marks a new milestone in his career: it is a newly formed trio with two fellow musicians of the same age. Julian Wohlmuth, a long-time friend of Diknu, fires up the band with his driving rhythm guitar and at the same time adds joy, enthusiasm and incredible freshness to the sounds of the formation with serene cheerfulness. Double bass player Martin Heinzle brings the earthy sound to the trio. With virtuosity and a keen sense of tone, he excels at solos as well as accompaniment and brings momentum to the band with his fine grooves. The compositions were written in the Corona pandemic. It is a beautiful combination of clear sound and fresh and cheeky playing and improvisation! Almost all the compositions were penned by the band leader. Only one song by Django Reinhardt made it into the programme: Nuages! The master’s “footprints” may seem overpowering, but Diknu confidently knows not to fall into the epigone-like “copy/paste” mode. Swing de Vienne at its best!
